Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Catcher Katie Smith had a career-day for the Indiana Wesleyan University softball team on Saturday afternoon in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.
But the near perfect game for Smith was wasted in a 10-7 loss to Spring Arbor (Mich.) University that eliminated Indiana Wesleyan from the tournament.
Smith was 4-of-4 from the plate with six RBIs. She blasted a 2-run home run, scored a run and knocked in at least one run in each of her four at bats.
The offensive slugfest showcased the teams combining for 17 runs on 33 hits. Both teams scored runs in four different innings.
Spring Arbor attempted to run away with the game early, scoring in each of the first three innings to build a 9-3 advantage. But down 10-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Smith hit a 2-run jack to cut the deficit in half at 10-5.
Smith would chase home two more runs in the sixth inning with a bases loaded single to make the score 10-7 and bring the tying run to the plate with just one out. Spring Arbor pitcher Erika Leher would regroup and force a Dana Runyan fly out and a groundout by shortstop Chelsea Jones to close the inning.
Indiana Wesleyan threatened one final time in the seventh when pitcher Abbie Forman led off with a single and leftfielder Katie Brummett walked to bring the tying run to the plate with nobody out. Again, Lehr would escape the jam with three straight outs to put Spring Arbor into the regional championship game.
Centerfielder Tamara Davis joined Smith with a perfect day at the plate with hits in all four at bats. Davis contributed a pair of doubles, three runs scored and one run knocked in. Jones finished 3-for-4 at the plate and first baseman Erin Moeller was 2-for-4.
Forman took the loss for the Wildcats. She allowed 10 runs on 17 hits in a complete game performance.
Cedarville (Ohio) University won the regional championship with a 1-0 win over Spring Arbor. Cedarville went unbeaten over the weekend to earn the automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament on May 4-6 in Winona Lake, Indiana.
