Wildcats and Knights Duel to a Split Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MARION, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan softball finished up the MCC regular season with a doubleheader split with Marian (Ind.) University at Wildcat Field on Thursday evening. IWU won the first game 3-0 and lost the second game 13-5.

The Wildcats brief offensive onslaught in the bottom of the fourth inning was all that the IWU defense, led by pitcher Abbie Forman, would need to capture the first game by a score of 3-0. After three and a half scoreless innings, Forman showcased her all-around game by hitting a double off of the left field fence to score Katie Smith and Chelsea Jones, who had both singled to begin the inning. IWU senior Katie Hall would then record a single to right field that scored Forman.

Indiana Wesleyan out hit the Knights (27-6, 8-4 MCC) by a margin of 7-3.

In addition to recording two hits and two RBIs, Forman went the distance on the mound to earn the shutout win. She allowed only three hits and two walks and struck out 10 batters.

Game two saw a reversal of fortune as Marian used a late rally to gain the victory 13-5. IWU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the third inning when center fielder Tamara Davis hit a double and scored when designated player Dana Runyan launched a two-run homerun. However, the Knights responded with three runs in the fourth inning, seven runs in the sixth inning, and three runs in the seventh inning to stun the Wildcats. Seven of the Marian runs were marked as unearned as Indiana Wesleyan recorded four errors in the loss.

Marian broke out of their first game hitting slump by outhitting Indiana Wesleyan 17-10 in the second contest.

IWU freshman Gabby McIntire went 3-for-4 with an RBI at the dish, while Runyan and Davis both recorded two hits.

Abbie Forman took the loss for the Wildcats in the second game as she allowed 13 runs, six earned, on 17 hits and two walks, along with seven strikeouts.

The Wildcats end Mid-Central College Conference play with an 8-8 record and now stand at 21-17 overall on the season.

Indiana Wesleyan will begin postseason play on April 29 as they compete in the NCCAA Regional Tournament.
