MARION, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan University softball opened Mid-Central College Conference play on Tuesday with a pair of losses to Huntington (Ind.) University by scores of 3-0 and 5-1.
In game one, the Wildcats fell behind in the second inning after a pair of singles scored Foresters outfielder Allison Greene. Huntington would add a pair of insurance runs in the fourth inning on a two-run homerun by shortstop Aubrey Garner.
Indiana Wesleyan mounted a threat in the bottom of the third inning as Emily Sell, Chelsea Jones and Erin Moeller each recorded singles to load the bases, but the rally was snuffed
out by a strikeout and a groundout.
IWU freshman Gabby McIntire went the distance on the mound in the loss. She allowed three earned runs on nine hits and three walks.
The nightcap of the doubleheader saw Huntington jump out to a 4-0 lead after two innings as the Wildcats allowed two runs to score in each inning. The Indiana Wesleyan defense would tighten for the remainder of the game as they would surrender only one more run in the seventh inning. IWU's lone run of the afternoon came in the sixth inning. After centerfielder Tamara Davis led off with a bunt single, she reached third on a wild throw. Davis would then cross the plate on a dropped third strike as Dana Runyan recorded the RBI.
IWU junior Abbie Forman pitched the entirety of the second game. She allowed five runs, three earned, on nine hits and seven walks, while recording eight strikeouts.
The Wildcats fall to 11-9 (0-2 MCC) on the season, and Huntington improves to 10-0 (2-0 MCC).
Indiana Wesleyan will travel to Goshen (Ind.) College on Thursday March 31, for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
