Box Score HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- The magical run for the Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball team finally ran out in a 93-77 loss Saturday afternoon at No. 19-ranked Huntington (Ind.) University.
The school record win streak began with a 70-65 victory at Cedarville (Ohio) University on November 19, 2010. During the streak, Indiana Wesleyan opened Mid-Central College Conference play with 11 straight wins, the best conference start in program history.
Indiana Wesleyan (22-4, 11-1 MCC) continually won close games as 12 of the 19 contests were single digit win, including seven by three points or less. Highlighting the win streak was a pair of one point victories over rival Taylor (Ind.) University which came down to the final shot in both games.
But on Saturday the Wildcats ran into a hot shooting team that is very difficult to beat on its home floor (13-2 record). The Foresters were in need of a win following a loss to fellow No. 19-ranked Grace (Ind.) College on Thursday to help their national tournament hopes.
Huntington (19-7, 7-5 MCC) rarely missed on Saturday and opened the game hitting 10 of their first 15 shots to open up a 21-6 lead eight minutes into play. HU pushed their advantage to 17 points at 32-15 with 5:05 before halftime.
Indiana Wesleyan would close out the half on a small run to make the game interesting by halftime. IWU finished the final five minutes with a 14-7 run to cut the deficit to 10 at 39-29 as sophomore guard Aaron Martin drilled a 3-point shot at the buzzer.
Unfortunately, Indiana Wesleyan would get no closer in the second half. Huntington led 43-33 and then went on a 12-2 spurt to increase the advantage to 53-35.
Huntington never lost control of the game from that point on and Indiana Wesleyan could get no closer than 15 points (54-39) the rest of the way.
The Wildcats never got on track offensively as IWU continued to play without starting point guard Derrick Troyer for the third straight game. The Wildcats committed 16 turnovers and finished with only six assists.
Five Wildcats ended in double figures led by freshman guard Jordan Weidner with 16. Martin added 13 points and was 3-of-4 from 3-point range while sophomore forward Patrick Hopkins contributed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard George Jones IV also scored 12 and freshman guard Jeff Hoskins tallied 10 points in just six minutes of play.
Indiana Wesleyan will look to start a new streak at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 8 as IWU travels to play Spring Arbor (Mich.) University in Spring Arbor, Michigan.
