Box Score INDINAPOLIS, Ind. -- Marian (Ind.) University scored 35 of the final 47 points in the first half to pull off the upset over No. 9-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball 89-78 on Tuesday evening in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan had built an early 21-11 lead in a game that the Wildcats could have clinched an outright Mid-Central College Conference regular season title. But Marian had other ideas and used the 35-12 run to complete the half for a 46-33 halftime advantage.
Indiana Wesleyan never recovered and dropped their third game in the last four contests.
The Indiana Wesleyan loss coupled with a Grace (Ind.) College win tonight over University of Saint Francis (Ind.) makes Saturday's regular season finale huge for both teams. The winner of the game will earn the MCC Tournament No. 1-seed and home court advantage throughout the tournament. Grace can earn a share of the conference regular season title with a win while Indiana Wesleyan can clinch the outright title with a victory.
The Wildcats got a big game out of sophomore forward Patrick Hopkins. He scored a team-high 22 points with four rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman guard Jordan Weidner added 16 points, three rebounds and three assists while senior forward Will Hubertz ended the night with 13 points. Sophomore guard Aaron Martin scored 12 points and was 3-of-6 from deep.
Indiana Wesleyan held Marian to zero points for nearly the first four minutes of the game and it was five minutes until Marian registered their first field goal. But once Marian got firing they rarely missed.
Anthony Furlin tallied 28 points in leading the Knights to 50.9-percent (27 of 59) shooting. Anthony Evans added 19 and Jordan Tucker finished with 16.
Marian hardly missed in all aspects of the game on Tuesday. MU was 10-of-18 (55.6-percent) from 3-point range and 21-of-23 (91.3-percent) from the free throw line. Marian also out-rebounded Indiana Wesleyan 36-25.
Indiana Wesleyan falls to 23-6 overall and 12-3 in the MCC while Marian improves to 15-10 and 6-9 in the conference. Marian will finish sixth in the MCC.
The Wildcats will be either the first or second seed in the upcoming conference tournament which begins a week from Wednesday. IWU will host one of Taylor (Ind.) University, Bethel (Ind.) College or Goshen (Ind.) College in Luckey Arena.
Indiana Wesleyan hosts No. 16-ranked Grace at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 19. It will be Senior Day in Luckey Arena on Saturday and the game will also decide the top-seed in the conference tournament.
