Men's Basketball

Instant Classic; #2 IWU Men's Basketball Beats #4 Bellevue in OT

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- The Showdown at Luckey lived up to its billing in the final game of the Caleb Dimmich Memorial Classic on Saturday afternoon.

NAIA Division II No. 2-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University won a fun and compelling men's basketball contest over No. 4-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) University 100-93 in overtime. Neither team was able to gain a double digit lead throughout and the difference in the game was six or less for the final 32 minutes of regulation.

Indiana Wesleyan junior guard Aaron Martin seemed to have scored the game-winning bucket with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. With the shot clock winding down, Martin gained possession near the baseline and fired an off balance laser beam that somehow found the bottom of the net to give IWU an 82-80 lead.

"That was awesome," said Indiana Wesleyan junior forward Patrick Hopkins. "I don't know what he did but he threw it up and it went in. But that's what we're all here for. He makes his shots, I make mine, Jordan (Weidner) makes his. It's just a team effort."

Bellevue had the last possession and nearly won the game on a 3-point attempt that did everything but go down. BU's James Parrott grabbed the offensive rebound and the buzzer sounded as Indiana Wesleyan celebrated an apparent victory. But the game was not over as the referees added 0.4 seconds to the clock.

The inbounds pass was towards the basket which Parrott soared above multiple Wildcat defenders for the game-tying alley-oop basket as the horn sounded and the game went into overtime.George Jones IV

Ten seconds into overtime, Martin drilled a 3-pointer from the corner to give Indiana Wesleyan an 85-82 advantage, a lead IWU would not surrender.

The closest Bellevue would get was 92-91 with 1:20 remaining, but Indiana Wesleyan scored the next six points. Junior guard George Jones IV scored in the paint and a Bellevue offensive foul turned into a Martin layup for a 96-91 lead with 52 seconds to go. After a defensive stop, sophomore guard Jordan Weidner was fouled with 34 seconds left. He hit both free throws to ice the game at 98-91. The seven point advantage was the largest since IWU led 19-10.

"We got together before halftime and decided that we've been here before," said Hopkins. "We have to come together as a team and play really hard."

Indiana Wesleyan did just that and scored 18 points in the five minute overtime. IWU converted on nine-of-11 possessions in the extra period, including points in their final eight times with the ball.

"It was a great effort on all of our parts," added Hopkins. "Bellevue is a really good, athletic team and it was a nice win for us."

Hopkins finished the afternoon with career-highs of 29 points and 18 rebounds. He was 11-of-20 from the floor and 7-of-11 from the foul line. For his efforts he was named the MVP of the tournament.

"I like the fact that I contributed what I think I can do," said Hopkins. "But it was all the team and for who we were playing for with Caleb (the namesake of the tournament that was killed in a farming accident before his senior year in 1999) that gave me the extra energy to do what was needed to be done."

Three other Wildcats joined Hopkins in double digits in the scoring column. Martin had 21 points, Weidner added 16 and Jones IV finished with 12.

IWU senior guard Derrick Troyer was also named to the All-Tournament team. The point guard contributed eight points and five rebounds, but was honored for his ball handling skills. He had four assists with zero turnovers.

Parrott earned a game-high 33 points on 11-of-16 shooting and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Diop added a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards before fouling out in overtime.

Indiana Wesleyan will continue its tough stretch with a home game against Union (Ky.) College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9. Union is receiving votes in the NAIA DII Top-25 Coaches' Poll.

"We're going to look at what we did wrong this weekend and correct those," Hopkins said. "We have Union (Ky.) coming in Wednesday who's a tough team that went out to nationals last year. We need to see what to correct to beat them."
