Dial Comes up Golden as IWU Women's Soccer Stuns Grace in OT

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- Junior forward Kylie Dial scored the decisive golden goal in the fifth minute of overtime to lift the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team to an electrifying 3-2 victory over Grace (Ind.) College at Wildcat Field.

"In overtime, we sat everybody down on the bench and said we're going to go to flanks, we're going to play hard, and we're going to get the ball one on one, and we're just going to take that player," said an excited Indiana Wesleyan head coach Dr. John Bratcher. "If you get stuffed, you get stuffed. If not, it's going to go in."

Dial followed Bratcher's words for the game-winning goal. When she received the ball at the top corner of the 18-yard box she beat one defender. As she came down to the goal line she deked another player and found herself all alone with the goalkeeper. Dial slipped it past her to send the Wildcat faithful rushing onto the field and the stands into a ruckus.

"We played with intensity for the whole game and into overtime," continued Bratcher. "We had another incident with an injury and just put somebody else in there and they stepped up and maybe even played above their ability. We moved people around. They were expecting us in a different formation and it took them awhile to change. We really put the pressure on them. I am really happy how the girls came out and played tonight."

Grace entered play in second place in the Mid-Central College Conference standings, just two point behind Spring Arbor (Mich.) University. The loss by Grace coupled with Spring Arbor's 5-1 win at Goshen eliminated Grace from being able to play for the MCC regular season title with one game left.

One of the biggest components of tonight's match that kept Indiana Wesleyan right with Grace was sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Fulkerson. In just her fourth career start, Fulkerson made eight saves on the 10 shots on goal the Lancers put on her, including six during the second half.

"Rachel made some great saves," stated Bratcher. "She has really come on in the two years that Coach Sproul has coached her. That's a good testament to his work and to her work. She never had a goalkeeper coach before and she has made some very good improvements."

Grace scored the first goal of the match in the 14th minute for the early 1-0 advantage.

Indiana Wesleyan would strike five minutes later when junior forward Kelsey Johnston created a turnover inside the 18-yard box and rifled home the goal for a 1-1 tie. But momentum quickly shifted back to Grace when the Lancers answered just 26 seconds later to regain a 2-1 lead in the 20th minute.

The score remained 2-1 until the 74th minute. Following a Grace foul just outside the 18-yard box, Indiana Wesleyan would capitalize on a set play off the free kick. Dial took the kick and found senior defender Kristin Perrine who was able to cross the pass in front of the goal. Freshman midfielder Annette Somercik gathered the pass and found the back of the net for the 2-2 tie.

"It was a set play that we never used," said Bratcher. "It worked to perfection."

Neither team would score over the final 16 minutes of regulation. Dial's goal in the 95th minute was the only shot either team took in the overtime period.

"We did exactly what we wanted to do," Bratcher said. "Checking back, turning and looking outside, going over the top. We followed the game part for the most part."

It was a milestone victory tonight for Bratcher. It was hit 200th win as a women's soccer head coach. Bratcher has built a 164-37-14 record in his 10th year at the helm for Indiana Wesleyan. He also compiled a 36-21-2 record during a three year run as the women's coach at Lee (Tenn.) University.

Indiana Wesleyan completes the regular season on Tuesday with another home match at Wildcat Field. IWU will host Goshen (Ind.) College at 7 p.m. on October 25.
