Box Score MARION, Ind. -- The wins keep coming for the Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball team as they finally win in convincing fashion in a Mid-Central College Conference game.
No. 12-ranked Indiana Wesleyan defeated visiting Spring Arbor (Mich.) University 76-59 on Saturday afternoon in Luckey Arena. IWU won by 17 points after their first four conference wins came at a combined total of 10 points.
Sophomore forward Patrick Hopkins scored in the paint to tie the game 11-11 with 12:25 on the clock and on the next possession sophomore guard George Jones IV scored a traditional 3-point lead at 11:15 as the Wildcats never trailed the rest of the afternoon.
The score was tied 19-19 and 7:22 left before halftime. Freshman guard Jordan Weidner hit the first of four 3-pointers during a six minute stretch to ignite a furious 22-3 run to close out the half as Indiana Wesleyan suddenly led 41-22 at the break.
Early in the second half Spring Arbor made one final push at Indiana Wesleyan.
Spring Arbor scored on back-to-back possessions with a 3-pointer by senior forward Willie Pickvet and then a jump shot from freshman guard Rob Hogans to trim the deficit to 12 (51-39) as momentum crept slowly to the Cougars.
But the Wildcats would bring closure to the contest with an 8-0 run to lead 59-39 midway through the half. IWU would on two occasions increase the advantage to 22 points on field goals by Weidner (65-43) and senior forward Will Hubertz (67-45).
Weidner and Hopkins continue to shine for Indiana Wesleyan as the pair combined for 36 points versus Spring Arbor. Weidner finished with 19 points and five assists while hitting 4-of-4 from outside. Hopkins collected his fifth double-double in the past six games with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Wildcats took care of the ball on Saturday, committing a season-low eight turnovers, including just three in the opening 20 minutes.
With the victory, Indiana Wesleyan closes in on the program record 14 game win streak set last season. With 13 consecutive wins, IWU could match the record with a win their next time out which will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11 at No. 5-ranked University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
