Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball won all four games this weekend as the host of the IWU Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Wildcat Field.
The wins are a stretch of 13 victories for the Wildcats in their last 15 games. IWU improves to 25-13 for the season.
Following a pair of shutout victories on Friday, Indiana Wesleyan defeated University of Saint Francis (Ind.) 9-5 and completed the weekend with an 8-2 win against Calumet (Ind.) College of St. Joseph.
The Wildcats exploded for five runs in the first inning in the 9-5 victory over Saint Francis in a non-conference tilt. But IWU had to hang on late to collect the win.
Second baseman Christy Gibson doubled down the left field line and scored a batter later when shortstop Katie Berkemeier hit a sac fly. Leftfielder Kelsey Decker and first baseman Abbie Forman drew back-to-back walks with one out. Designated player Erin Abrams singled the opposite way to score Decker and catcher Molly Yothment singled to center to score Forman. Third baseman Melissa Kimmel doubled to deep left center for two RBI to complete the scoring in the first and a 5-0 IWU lead.
Saint Francis got back into the game in the third inning with three runs. All three runs on Indiana Wesleyan starting pitcher Katie Hall were unearned due to two IWU miscues.
Indiana Wesleyan was able to get one run back in the fourth as Berkemeier doubled home right fielder Katie Brummett, who led off the inning with a double of her own. IWU led 6-3 after four.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cougar shortstop Kaelan Poindexter clubbed a two-run home run to bring USF to within one run at 6-5.
But the Wildcats quickly responded with a three run sixth inning.
Indiana Wesleyan loaded the bases with nobody out and centerfielder Tamara Davis singled to bring home Brummett. Decker grounded out to second which scored Gibson and then Forman hit a sac fly to left as IWU led 9-5 which was the final tally.
Hall was the winning pitcher as she allowed five runs - two earned - in six innings. She walked two and struck out eight. Nicole Clark finished the game in one inning of relief and did not allow a base runner.
Berkemeier was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, Yothment was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run and Gibson was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
In the final game of the tournament, Indiana Wesleyan had no troubles with Calumet-St. Joseph as IWU won 8-2 for a 4-0 weekend.
The Wildcats once again jumped out to a quick start, this time with four runs in the opening inning. IWU increased their lead to 5-0 with a single run in the fourth before Calumet-St. Joseph crossed the plate for the first time in the bottom half of the inning.
Calumet-St. Joseph closed the margin to 5-2 with another run in the fifth inning but Indiana Wesleyan pulled away in the top of the sixth with three runs for the 8-2 margin.
Nine Wildcats recorded hits as IWU tallied 12 in the game. Davis, Yothment and Kimmel all led the team with two hits apiece while Decker, Forman and Yothment each collected two RBI apiece.
Forman was the winning pitcher for Indiana Wesleyan with a complete game. She scattered seven hits for two runs and walked five while striking out eight Crimson Waves.
Indiana Wesleyan and Saint Francis will renew acquaintances on Thursday, April 22 at Wildcat Field. The doubleheader will be Mid-Central College Conference games and are a make-up of games postponed on March 27.
