Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- The IWU Tournament opened with a pair of victories for the Indiana Wesleyan University softball team on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan opened their weekend with a 5-0 blanking of Trinity Christian (Ill.) College and concluded Friday with a 7-0 shutout of Trinity International (Ill.) University to improve to 23-13 on the season.
The Wildcats received excellent pitching from all three pitchers on Friday as they combined for no runs and five hits in 14 innings of work.
Katie Hall starred once again as she pitched a complete game shutout against Trinity International in the second game of the day. Hall allowed just two hits, one walk in seven innings while striking out 10 Trojans.
Abbie Forman earned the victory in game one against Trinity Christian. Forman gave up two hits and one walk in five innings while collecting six strikeouts. Nicole Clark finished off the Trolls with one hit in two innings of relief.
In the opening contest with Trinity Christian, Indiana Wesleyan did all their damage in the fourth inning. IWU scored all five of their runs in the inning to break a scoreless tie after three innings.
Leftfielder Kelsey Decker got things started with a single to shallow center field and designated player Erin Abrams followed with a bunt single. The Wildcats would record two straight outs, but timely hitting led to five runs.
Forman singled to left to chase home Abrams and Yothment followed on the error by the leftfielder. Third baseman Melissa Kimmel singled to score Forman and catcher Christy Gibson doubled to deep left center field to bring Kimmel in to score for a 4-0 lead. Shortstop Katie Berkemeier completed the scoring with a RBI single to right that scored Gibson for the fifth run of the inning.
Berkemeier and Decker each finished 2-for-3 at the plate as Indiana Wesleyan outhit Trinity Christian 9-3.
Indiana Wesleyan wasted little time in plating some runs in the second game of the day against Trinity International. IWU scored twice in the opening inning en route to the 7-0 victory. Indiana Wesleyan added one more in the third and the final four in the fifth.
Gibson walked to lead off the IWU first inning and was followed by a single up the middle by Berkemeier. Centerfielder Tamara Davis sacrificed them into scoring position and Gibson scored on a wild pitch. Berkemeier then scored later in the inning on a sac fly to deep left center field off the bat of designated player Dana Runyan.
The third run of the game for the Wildcats was a RBI single by Forman that scored Davis.
In a repeat from the third inning, Forman would single as Davis scored from second in the bottom of the fifth inning. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, catcher Molly Yothment reached base on an error which allowed Decker and Forman to score. Smith, pinch hitting for the Wildcats, completed the scoring in the game with a sac fly to deep left field to score Gibson for a 7-0 margin.
Davis led the offense with a 3-for-3 performance and two runs scored. Forman finished 2-for-3 with a run, two RBI and a walk while Gibson walked twice and scored a run.
Indiana Wesleyan will finish the IWU Tournament on Saturday with two more games. Indiana Wesleyan will battle University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 12 p.m. and Calumet (Ind.) College of St. Joseph at 4 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
