Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan University softball etched out a pair of one run victories Wednesday afternoon over Spring Arbor (Mich.) University in Mid-Central College Conference action at Wildcat Field.
The Wildcats captured a 1-0 win in the first game while taking game two 5-4 via a walk-off single.
With two victories, Indiana Wesleyan improves their conference record to 9-3 and now stands 21-13 overall. Spring Arbor drops to 16-16 and 3-5 in MCC play.
Right fielder Katie Brummett singled home catcher Molly Yothment in the second inning for the only run of game one. Yothment led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a sac bunt by designated player Erin Abrams. Yothment then advanced to third base on a wild pitch.
Brummett was 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
Starting pitcher Katie Hall continues to dominate for the Wildcats. She finished with a complete game shutout with four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
Hall retired 11 straight batters before Spring Arbor designated player Chelsea Brancheau double to deep right field to lead off the seventh inning as she represented the tying run. Following a pop out to shortstop, Spring Arbor third baseman Debbie England hit a line drive to left field that was caught by Kelsey Decker. Decker hurried the throw into second base to double off pinch runner Brooke Sevek to end the game.
In game two, Indiana Wesleyan quickly gained a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and an additional run in the third.
The Wildcats got their two runs in the second off an opposite field two-run home run by Abrams. In the third inning, second baseman Christy Gibson singled up the middle, advanced to second on a sac bunt by shortstop Katie Berkemeier and advanced to third base on a ground out. She would score two pitches later on a wild pitch for a 3-0 IWU lead.
Spring Arbor scored their first of the day in the top of the fourth inning which made it a 3-1 ballgame. But IWU quickly increased the lead back to three runs with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Abrams doubled and pinch runner Allie Reichard scored on a RBI single from pitcher Abbie Forman.
The Cougars cut the lead in half at 4-2 in the top of the fifth courtesy of a RBI double. SAU added another run in the sixth inning but left the game-tying run and go ahead run stranded in scoring position.
Spring Arbor was down to their final out as the first two Cougars in the seventh inning swung at the first pitch and flied out. On the third pitch of the inning, designated player Chelsea Brancheau homered to deep left center field to tie the game at 4-4.
But Indiana Wesleyan was resilient in the bottom half of the inning. Gibson led off with a shallow single to left field. Berkemeier laid down a sac bunt to advance Gibson to second. Centerfielder Tamara Davis beat out an infield single to shortstop to put runners on first and third with one out.
On a 1-2 pitch, leftfielder Kelsey Decker hit a soft looper that hugged the foul line down right field as the ball dropped fair for a walk-off single.
Abrams was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored while Gibson finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Forman reached base three times with a 2-for-2 performance and a walk.
Forman went the distance pitching all seven innings for the Wildcats. Three of the four runs were earned as she allowed eight hits and struck out five.
Indiana Wesleyan will remain at home for their next games. IWU hosts the IWU Tournament on Friday and Saturday, April 16-17 at Wildcat Field.
