Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Defending NCCAA national champion Campbellsville (Ky.) University was all that stood between the Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball team and the program's third ever NCCAA national championship.
The Wildcats would complete their impressive run down the stretch and deny Campbellsville with a 3-0 win to claim the 2010 NCCAA National Championship in Kissimmee, Florida.
Indiana Wesleyan concluded the perfect national tournament run with a convincing 25-21, 25-18, 25-15 victory to finish 6-0 over the last three days. IWU completes the season at 33-11 and on a 10-match win streak. Over the final 25 matches of the season, Indiana Wesleyan went 22-3.
The offense was spread out in the title match as five players finished between seven and nine kills.
Junior middle hitter Lauryn Barfell led the Wildcats with nine kills and 11 block assists. Junior outside hitter Kate Denlinger also had nine kills to pace the Wildcats along with six block assists.
Freshman outside hitter Rae Brandes contributed eight kills and 11 digs, junior middle hitter Peyton Thompson killed eight attempts and totaled five block assists and sophomore outside hitter Rachel Quackenbush finished with seven kills and four block assists. Sophomore setter Yui Iwase assisted on 37 Wildcat kills.
Following the championship victory, Indiana Wesleyan was showered with season and tournament honors.
Rae Brandes was selected as a member of the NCCAA All-American First Team. She finished the season with a team-best 2.9 kills/set and was second with 3.12 digs/set.
Iwase was Indiana Wesleyan's second honoree as she was named NCCAA All-American Second Team. The setter averaged 10.7 assists/set, 2.17 digs/set and tallied 84 total blocks.
Brandes and Thompson represented Indiana Wesleyan on the NCCAA National Championship All-Tournament Team.
Brandes averaged 3.0 kills/set during the six match tournament which topped the team while finishing second on IWU with 3.43 digs/set.
Thompson played a key offensive role for IWU with 2.43 kills/set during the tournament. But her biggest contribution came at the net defensively with a team leading two solo blocks and 30 blocks assists (1.52/set).
Head coach Candace Moats was honored as the NCCAA National Coach of the Year. Moats led Indiana Wesleyan to a 33-11 overall record and a perfect NCCAA postseason run. Indiana Wesleyan went 4-0 to win the NCCAA Midwest Regional title and completed the year with a 6-0 mark at the NCCAA National Championship. The award is the fourth in her career.
