CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Cedarville (Ohio) University used a late flurry to shock Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer 4-3 on Saturday night in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament championship match at Cedarville.
Indiana Wesleyan held a late 3-1 lead until Cedarville exploded for three goals in the final eight minutes to steal the victory and the automatic berth to the NCCAA National Tournament.
Wildcat freshman Geoff Bowman notched a goal in the 77th minute to give IWU a two goal advantage at 3-1 with just 13 minutes left to play.
But Cedarville stormed back can was able to cut the deficit to one when Joseph Mueller found the back of the net in the 83rd minute. Three minutes later Eric Newman scored for Cedarville to tie the match 3-3 in the 86th minute of play.
The Yellow Jackets capped the scoring frenzy in the 89th minute with the game-winner from Timmy Waller. All three Yellow Jacket goals in the final eight minutes were unassisted.
Indiana Wesleyan captured the initial lead in the 25thminute of the regional championship as Ross Tanzer scored off a feed from David Trainer for the 1-0 lead. IWU took that lead into halftime.
Cedarville struck first in the second half as a goal from Matt Niemiec in the 57thminute created a 1-1 tie. Five minutes later, Kyle Meier regained the advantage for Indiana Wesleyan with the assist from Mitch Lobdell.
The Yellow Jackets held a 28-16 advantage in shots Saturday night but just an 11-10 advantage in shots on goal. IWU goalkeeper Dylan McCauley collected seven saves for the Wildcats.
Cedarville wins the NCCAA Midwest Region automatic bid to the NCCAA National Championship and is now 11-8-0 on the season. Indiana Wesleyan drops to 11-10-1.
