GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-The No. 3-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball team returned to their winning ways on Saturday by defeating Madonna (Mich.) University at Cornerstone (Mich.) University by a score of 82-56.
A day after dropping the opening game of the MCC/WHAC Challenge, the Wildcats put forth a strong all-around team effort to capture the win. Indiana Wesleyan led by 15 at the half and never trailed in the second half to close out the victory. IWU outrebounded Madonna by a margin of 39-19. The Wildcats used their signature defense to limit Madonna to 29.5% (13-44) shooting from the field.
IWU sophomore forward Stephanie Burtch had a big game scoring 19 points and hauling in six rebounds. Senior forward Elaine Hessel contributed 17 points, while junior center Krystal Stoneking scored 11 points and gathered in seven caroms. The Wildcats bench outscored Madonna's bench 33-12.
The win improves the Wildcats to 5-1 on the season, while Madonna drops to 1-2.
Indiana Wesleyan's next game will be on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Upland, Indiana as the Wildcats take on Taylor (Ind.) University.
