MARION, Ind.- Spring Arbor (Mich.) University clinched the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament Championship over Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer in penalty kick shootout fashion on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
After a scoreless opening half, Indiana Wesleyan senior midfielder Brittany Smith bent a shot from just outside of the penalty box into the left side of the net in the 51st minute of play. The senior's 13th goal of the year provided all the firepower the Wildcats would get in regulation time.
Spring Arbor extended the match when sophomore Maegan Smith's shot found its way under IWU goalkeeper Beth Ann Nowak in the 87th minute.
After 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of rainy overtime the score was still tied 1-1. The ensuing shootout went six rounds before Spring Arbor emerged with a 5-4 win. The shootout victory gives the Cougars the MCC's automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament.
With the tie, the Wildcats' records stands at 17-2-1 while Spring Arbor record stands at 16-4-1.
