MARION, Ind. - The IWU women's soccer team extended their winning streak to six games on Saturday night at Wildcat Field, as the Wildcats defeated Huntington (Ind.) University 2-0.
IWU opened the scoring in the fourth minute with the eventual game-winner when senior midfielder Brittany Smith's shot ricocheted off the cross bar and fellow senior Megan Marshall's follow up found the back of the net for her 11th goal of the season.
Both squads had several opportunities to light up the scoreboard throughout the match, but were stifled by excellent defense and superb saves by both goalkeepers until the 81st minute. IWU junior forward Tori Lee was fouled in the penalty box and on the ensuing penalty kick, Brittany Smith calmly recorded her 10th goal of the season for a 2-0 Wildcat lead.
"I talked to Brittany at the beginning of the season about taking penalty kicks," said IWU head coach Dr. John Bratcher. "She felt very confident in herself and she hasn't missed one yet this year."
IWU sophomore goalkeeper Beth Anne recorded the shutout with six saves on the evening.
The win marks the Wildcats 19th victory in their past 20 matches against Mid-Central College Conference opponents.
The Wildcats use the win to improve to 10-2-0 (3-0-0 MCC), while the Foresters drop to 6-6-1 (2-1-1 MCC) on the season. IWU now sits alone on top the conference standings.
IWU's next match will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12, at Wildcat Field as the Wildcats take on the University (Ind.) of St. Francis.
