MARION, Ind. - The Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team used a high-octane offense and a stout defensive effort to defeat Marian (Ind.) University 6-1 Wednesday night at Wildcat Field.
IWU dominated the first half, which included a 12 minute stretch where the Wildcats recorded four goals from four different players to seize control of the match. IWU outshot Marian 11-3 in the opening half, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 20th minute when senior forward Megan Marshall's shot from the left side of the penalty box deflected off the goalkeeper's hands and found the hea
d of forward Kylie Dial. The sophomore's header was her fifth goal of the season.
IWU sophomore forward Kelsey Johnston added a second goal in the 22nd minute off of a pass from fellow sophomore Kylie Dial. Johnston would add her second goal of the night in the 58th minute. Junior defender Heidi Breckner and senior midfielder Brittany Smith received assists on the goal.
Megan Marshall recorded her team-high 10th goal of the season in the 25th minute off of a cross from sophomore Suzy Miesse.
Smith would continue the scoring barrage in the 32nd minute. Her header found the back of the net off of a corner kick from Marshall. Smith would score her second goal of the night on a penalty kick in the 67th minute. She received the scoring opportunity when junior Tori Lee was knocked down in the 18-yard box.
Marian scored its lone goal on a penalty kick in the 84th minute when junior Ally Higgenbottom's PK just got under IWU sophomore goalkeeper Jaime Speidel.
With the win, IWU improves to 9-2-0 (2-0-0 MCC), while Marian falls to 6-5-0 (0-3-0 MCC).
The Wildcats next match will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 9 against Huntington (Ind.) University at Wildcat Field.
