Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. -- It was an unblemished Mid-Central College Conference season for the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team.
The Wildcats completed the 8-0-0 run on Wednesday night with a windy 2-0 victory at Goshen (Ind.) College. It is the first perfect season for the Wildcats in three years when the 2007 team also went 8-0-0 in conference action.
Indiana Wesleyan (15-2-0) dominated the conference season by outscoring the opposition 30-4 in the eight MCC matches. IWU totaled four shutouts in the conference season while no team scored more than one goal against the Wildcats.
But on Tuesday evening, the wind really affected the match against Goshen, who is now 5-12-0 overall and 0-8-0 in the MCC. Half the MCC matches scheduled for Tuesday were postponed until Wednesday due to the windy conditions.
Despite controlling the tempo of the match, the Wildcats outshot the Maple Leafs 18-5 with a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal, the match remained scoreless until late in the second half.
Sophomore forward Kelsey Johnston was assisted by senior forward Megan Marshall for the first goal of the night, and the game-winner, in the 76th minute. Senior forward Brittany Smith added an insurance goal a bit later in the 88th minute for the 2-0 advantage.
Wildcat sophomore goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak collected a pair of saves Tuesday night to earn her fourth shutout of the season and the eighth for the team.
The victory clinches an outright MCC title which is the 13th overall for the women's soccer program, all since 1996. Indiana Wesleyan already wrapped up the No. 1-seed in the MCC Tournament with their win at Grace (Ind.) College on Saturday.
No. 8-ranked Indiana Wesleyan will next take the field on Saturday, October 30 in the MCC Tournament First Round. IWU will discover their opponent for the opening round match on Wednesday when the final two conference matches are contested.
