Box Score UPLAND, Ind. (Box Score) -- Junior forward Megan Marshall scored the only goal of the match in the 79th minute for a 1-0 victory for the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team over Taylor (Ind.) University in Upland, Indiana.
Freshman forward Kelsey Johnston drove down the left side of the pitch and crossed a pass from the edge of the 18-yard box to Marshall who promptly beat the Taylor goalkeeper for the tally. It was the third goal of the season for the defending MCC Offensive Player of the Week.
"We are always glad to go out and get the win," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Dr. John Bratcher. "We faced a tough Taylor team, especially in the first 15 minutes of the match. But we were able to adjust and got a lot of shots off today. The girls usually have a better shooting percentage than they did today, but we got enough scoring needed for the win."
Indiana Wesleyan controlled much of the match as IWU outshot the host 16-4 in the contest. Nine Indiana Wesleyan shots were on goal compared to just one for Taylor. IWU also earned nine of the 10 corner kicks in the first Mid-Central College Conference match for both teams.
Freshman goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak earned her first collegiate shutout with a one save performance. It was the fifth team shutout this season for the stout Wildcat defense.
Bratcher said, "The girls did a real good job battling through some adversity today. I am proud of the way they played and overcoming some obstacles throughout the match. But we will need to play better than that on Saturday to get the win."
The No. 11-ranked Wildcats move to 7-1-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in the MCC. Taylor is now 4-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference action.
Indiana Wesleyan will next compete at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 3 when the Wildcats host Grace (Ind.) College during Homecoming weekend.
