Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- Junior forward Megan Marshall and junior midfielder Brittany Smith each scored a first half goal to lead the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory Wednesday night over Madonna (Mich.) University at Wildcat Field.
Madonna (2-7-0) struck first with a goal in the 23rd minute of play. Senior forward Kaila Moore knocked a header past Indiana Wesleyan goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
The Wildcats (5-1-1) rallied with a Marshall goal in the 30th minute. Marshall cracked the ball from the corner of the 18-yard box past the keeper to tie the score 1-1.
Late in the opening half, sophomore midfielder Tori Lee advanced the ball down the sideline and hit a crossing pass to Smith. She struck the pass in midair past the Madonna keeper to give IWU the 2-1 lead in the 43rd minute, which was the score at halftime.
The Indiana Wesleyan defense clamped down even more in the second half of play and allowed Madonna just one shot, which was not on goal. Despite the one goal victory, Indiana Wesleyan controlled much of the match. IWU outshot the visitors 18-3 for the night and held an 11-2 advantage in shots on the net.
Nowak was credited with the win in goal for the Wildcats. The freshman made one save in two chances.
Indiana Wesleyan will next compete at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 26 as the Wildcats host Malone (Ohio) University at Wildcat Field.
