Box Score JOLIET, Ill. (Box Score) -- Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer teams' 3-0 shutout of host St. Xavier (Ill.) University on Saturday afternoon made Dr. John Bratcher the first soccer coach in NAIA history to win 450 matches.
"It is a tremendous accomplishment and it takes a lot of years and a lot of great players to reach a milestone like this," said Bratcher after the match. "It really rejuvenates me to go out and win another 450," laughed Bratcher.
Despite controlling the first half of the match at St. Xavier (4-4-0), the contest was scoreless at intermission. Indiana Wesleyan held a 12-3 advantage in shots.
Following some adjustments during the break, the Wildcats (4-1-1) quickly put a mark on the scoreboard in the 50th minute of action. Sophomore midfielder Heidi Breckner headed home a corner kick off the foot of senior midfielder Catherine Turner for the 1-0 advantage.
Freshman forward Kylie Dial found a loose ball in the box to add an unassisted goal in the 67th minute for an insurance goal and a 2-0 lead.
The final score of the match was a Tori Lee goal. The sophomore midfielder received a pass in the box from junior forward Megan Marshall in the 81st minute to give Indiana Wesleyan the 3-0 victory.
Bratcher said, "My wife and family have been the biggest support for me all these years of coaching. I would like to thank them for without them this accomplishment could not have happened."
"I would also like to thank the administration at the three different institutions that I have worked at," continued Bratcher. "I have been very fortunate to work at such fine schools."
Bratcher started his career at Lee (Tenn.) University, where he coached both the men's and women's teams during his tenure there. His men's teams went a combined 170-102-17 with the women's teams going 36-21-2.
At Grand Rapids Baptist (Mich.) College (now Cornerstone University), Bratcher coached the men to a record of 119-34-10.
Currently in his eighth season at the helm for the Indiana Wesleyan women's soccer program, Bratcher has amassed a mark of 125-24-12 and is the most winning coach in school history.
Bratcher's career record is now 450-181-41.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 23 as the Wildcats host Madonna (Mich.) University at Wildcat Field.
