Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. (Box 1, Box 2) -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball lost a doubleheader to No. 8-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Bethel cruised to a 12-3 victory in the opening contest but had to rally late for an 8-6 win in the nightcap.
The highlight of the day for the Wildcats was freshman Abbie Forman. The pitcher and first baseman slugged her 11th home run of the season to tie the Indiana Wesleyan single season mark. Forman is now tied with Sarah Shivler who accomplished the feat three times in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
The home run also breaks the Indiana Wesleyan team record for home runs in a season at 23. The previous record of 22 was set in 2005.
In the opener, Bethel held a 5-1 advantage as the game headed into the seventh inning. The Pilots put the game away with a seven run inning to lead 12-1. The Wildcats added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to complete the scoring.
Bethel out-hit Indiana Wesleyan 14-3 in the contest. Centerfielder Tamara Davis completed the game with two of the hits for IWU as she added a run and a RBI.
The second game remained scoreless for the first two innings before the Wildcats plated a run in the third.
The Pilots tied the score 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Forman put the Wildcats back on top during the bottom of the fourth with a 3-run home run.
But Bethel closed the deficit to 4-3 with two runs in the fifth inning. A three run sixth inning put Bethel in the lead for the first time in the game at 6-4. Indiana Wesleyan responded with two runs in the sixth inning to tie the score at 6-6, but left the bases loaded.
Bethel would take the lead in the seventh with a two out single to capture the doubleheader sweep.
IWU starting pitcher Katie Hall was credited with the loss. She allowed three runs - one earned - in 5-2/3 innings pitched. She scattered seven hits and struck out four.
Forman, third baseman Katie Berkemeier, right fielder Katie Brummett and Davis all had two hits for the Wildcats. Berkemeier scored three runs and had a RBI.
Indiana Wesleyan falls to 20-11 this season and 3-5 in the Mid-Central College Conference. Bethel improves to 33-3 and 9-1 in conference action.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the diamond at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 9 as the Wildcats travel to play Goshen (Ind.) College.
