Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. (Box 1, Box 2) -- Indiana Wesleyan University used the long ball in a Mid-Central College Conference softball doubleheader sweep of visiting Grace (Ind.) College on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Freshman pitcher and first baseman Abbie Forman, the reigning MCC Player of the Week, connected for one home run in each game while senior shortstop Morgan Wheeler had a hat trick in the nightcap, including a walk-off home run in the fifth inning.
With the Wildcats leading 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Wheeler hit a three-run home run with two outs to give IWU the mercy rule victory in game two.
Indiana Wesleyan (20-9, 3-3 MCC) scored in all five innings as Wheeler was 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs and three runs scored. Forman hit her second home run of the day in the third inning and fifth in her last six games. She finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Katie Hall and Nicole Clark split the duties on the mound. Hall started and was awarded the victory with three innings of work. She allowed one unearned run on two hits. Clark threw two perfect innings in relief. The duo combined for three strikeouts and no walks.
In the first game, Indiana Wesleyan plated eight runs in the third inning for an 11-0 victory that also ended in a five inning mercy rule.
Nine different Wildcats earned a hit in the game, led by designated player Katie Brummett's 3-for-3 performance. Brummett doubled, scored a run and had three RBIs. Forman hit a home run and Wheeler hit a double and knocked in two runs.
Forman pitched four shutout innings while allowing three hits. Sophomore Katie Hall pitched the fifth and allowed one hit.
Indiana Wesleyan out-hit Grace 25-6 during the doubleheader. Grace falls to 4-15-1 overall and 1-2-1 in MCC action.
The Wildcats return to play this weekend at the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) Spring Fling in Joliet, Illinois.
