Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball went unbeaten in four games this weekend as the Wildcats hosted the IWU Tournament at Wildcat Field.
On Saturday, Indiana Wesleyan outlasted Walsh (Ohio) University 12-11 in a slugfest before scratching out a 3-1 victory over Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University.
The Wildcats opened the morning with three runs in the first inning and added another run in the second to quickly take a 4-0 lead. Walsh cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the third but the Wildcats totaled three runs in the fourth for a 7-2 advantage.
One run in the fifth and two in the sixth allowed Walsh to creep back into the game at 7-5. But a huge five run sixth inning for Indiana Wesleyan, capped by a grand slam from Katie Brummett, increased the IWU lead to 12-5.
Every run was needed as Walsh roared back with six runs before the second out was recorded in the seventh inning for a 12-11 Wildcat lead. Walsh had the tying run at second, but she was stranded as IWU escaped with the victory.
Walsh out-hit Indiana Wesleyan 15-13 in the contest.
Brummett ended the morning tilt 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Molly Yothment was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Morgan Wheeler and Kate Berkemeier each tallied two hits and one RBI. Wheeler scored three runs in the winning effort.
Nicole Clark earned the win for Indiana Wesleyan in 5-2/3 innings pitched. She allowed four runs on eight
hits while striking out seven.
The final game turned into a pitchers duel that was dominated by IWU starting pitcher Abbie Forman. Forman pitched a complete game against Olivet Nazarene and allowed one unearned run on three hits. The freshman helped herself out at the plate with a 1-for-2 performance and one RBI.
The Wildcats scored a run in the first for another early lead. Olivet Nazarene tied the score with a run in the top of the third. Indiana Wesleyan quickly responded with a run in the bottom half of the third before scoring an insurance run in the fifth.
Tamara Davis ended the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Wheeler was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Indiana Wesleyan improves their record to 15-6 on the season and has won 10 of their last 11 games.
The Wildcats will take the field again at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 as IWU hosts Indiana Tech.
