Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. (Box/Urbana, Box/USF) -- Indiana Wesleyan University won both games during the first day of the IWU Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
The Wildcats won 10-6 in their opening game against Urbana (Ohio) University and finished the afternoon with a 5-4 win against University of Saint Francis (Ill.).
In the first game with Urbana, the Blue Knights raced out to a quick 4-0 lead after two innings. IWU chipped away with single runs in the second and third innings before tying the score 4-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth.
The Wildcats exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to blow the game open at 10-4. The Blue Knights plated two runs in the seventh to complete the scoring at 10-6.
Abbie Forman and Molly Yothment guided the Indiana Wesleyan attack as each contributed two hits, a home run and three RBIs. Christy Gibson and Allison Reichard also rapped out two hits apiece. Tamara Davis went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Nicole Clark earned the complete game victory for the Wildcats. Clark allowed six runs - five earned - on eight hits. She struck out eight batters.
In the second game, Indiana Wesleyan was the team that roared to a quick start. But the Wildcats were
able to survive a late Saint Francis comeback attempt for their second win of the day.
Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a leadoff home run by Morgan Wheeler. IWU would then add a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning to lead 5-0.
Saint Francis answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own. In the final inning, Saint Francis' Maggie O'Shea belted a 2-run home run to draw USF to within 5-4. Reliever Kate Hall got the final outs for the save and the IWU win.
Forman was credited with the win as she allowed two runs on six hits in 4-2/3 innings. Hall pitched the final 2-1/3 innings and allowed two runs on one hit.
Wheeler ended the contest 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Davis went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Gibson plated the other RBI for the Wildcats.
Indiana Wesleyan is now 13-6 on the season and will play two more games on Saturday. IWU plays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
