Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. (Box 1, Box 2) -- Indiana Wesleyan University and Marian (Ind.) College split their Mid-Central College Conference softball opener on Tuesday afternoon in Marion.
Fans were treated to both ends of the spectrum as the first game was a pitchers duel and the final game featured 21 combined hits. The Wildcats claimed a 1-0 shutout in the first game while the Knights captured a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.
The opening game belonged to Indiana Wesleyan starting pitcher Nicole Clark. The sophomore threw a no-hitter as she completely dominated Marian batters. Clark faced one more than the minimum as she walked none and struck out six batters.
Marian had two players reach base via errors. The first one was wiped out on a double play.
Indiana Wesleyan (11-6, 1-1 MCC) rapped out five hits in the game. Freshman right fielder Allison Reichard drove in the game's only run in the second inning, chasing home junior second baseman Christy Gibson.
Marian rallied for a split with a 6-5 victory in the second contest.
The Knights led 3-0 before the Wildcats got on the board with a pair of runs in the third. Marian extended their lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth. IWU would tie the game with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Indiana Wesleyan put runners on the corner with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning but was unable to take the lead following a caught stealing and a strikeout.
Marian (8-4, 1-1 MCC) capitalized during the top of the seventh with a walk. A wild pitch allowed the runner
to advance to second with two outs. A single to center scored the eventual winning run on a close play at the plate.
Indiana Wesleyan went down 1-2-3 in the last of the seventh to end the game.
Senior shortstop Morgan Wheeler went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBIs. Junior first baseman Molly Yothment was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI while freshman left fielder Kelsey Decker ended the day with two hits.
Sophomore Katie Hall went two innings on the mound before leaving the game following a line drive that hit her lower leg. Hall allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work. Freshman Abbie Forman came in and finished the game for Hall and allowed five runs in five innings.
Indiana Wesleyan will next host the IWU Tournament this weekend on Friday and Saturday.
