First Half Brilliance Puts Men's Basketball into MCC Tournament Championship Game

Box Score

MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University hit 17 of their first 19 shots on Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats advance to the MCC Tournament championship game with an 88-80 win over visiting Huntington (Ind.) University in men's basketball action.

After the smoke had cleared in the opening period, Indiana Wesleyan was shooting a staggering 77.8-percent (21 of 27) from the field for a 46-30 lead.

Despite a second half of 37.0-percent (10 of 27) shooting from the floor, the Wildcats were able to finish out the game at the free throw line to complete a three-game season sweep of the Foresters. After zero free throw attempts in the first 20 minutes, the Wildcats made 20-of-24 (83.3-percent) in the final 20 minutes to keep the Foresters at bay.

It was an all around effort for Indiana Wesleyan as six different players scored double figures, led by senior guard Antonio Murrell's game-high 23 points. He was 7-of-11 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. He also dished out seven helpers.

Indiana Wesleyan wasted no time as the Wildcats made their first four shots to quickly post a 9-4 lead. Following their first missed shot of the day, Indiana Wesleyan scored on their next two possessions to own a 14-6 advantage with just over six minutes off the clock.

Huntington (20-12) was able to stay close with some timely and off-balanced shots to pull back within four at 19-15. But Indiana Wesleyan tallied the next six points to gain their first double digit lead at 25-15 with 11:21 in the half.

Forester freshman forward Caleb Kennedy later scored in the paint to bring HU within 31-24. Indiana Wesleyan though scored eight straight points for a 39-24 advantage as 4:19 remained before half. Indiana Wesleyan sank nine straight field goal attempts during a stretch of six minutes and 35 seconds. Murrell's missed shot to end the streak at 5:09 was the first missed basket inside the 3-point arc.

Following one Huntington free throw, IWU freshman guard Derrick Troyer drained his only 3-point attempt to push the Indiana Wesleyan lead to a game-high 17 points at 42-25. Troyer ended with 11 points and four rebounds.

Murrell added the final two baskets in the half for the Wildcats as IWU took a 46-30 lead into the break. Antonio Murrell races past Kellen Zawadzki in the second half

Huntington chipped away at the deficit and closed it to single digits at 48-39 during the first five minutes of the second half. Indiana Wesleyan sophomore forward Will Hubertz connected on one of his three 3-pointers to give IWU a double digit lead again. Hubertz added 17 points off the Wildcat bench and was 6-of-10 shooting.

But Huntington responded with seven straight points in just over a minute to pull within five at 51-46 and 13:39 to play.

Indiana Wesleyan (27-5) calmly answered the Huntington run with a run of their own. Hubertz scored four points over the next two plus minutes to lead the 9-0 Wildcat run for a 60-46 advantage.

A pair of free throws from senior forward Landon Adler at 9:27 increased the IWU lead to 64-48. Adler had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. But once again Huntington clawed back with a 12-1 spurt to bring the score to 65-60.

The Wildcats would again withstand the Forester charge and quickly move the lead back to double digits at 75-64 and 4:08 left. The see-saw continued as the Foresters closed to within six at 77-71 with just under two minutes on the clock.

Huntington was forced to foul the rest of the way and would not get any closer as Indiana Wesleyan shut the door by hitting 9-of-10 free throws.

Indiana Wesleyan completed the afternoon at 57.4-percent (31 of 54) and 50.0-percent (6 of 12) from beyond the arc. Huntington shot 46.2-percent (30 of 65).

IWU junior forward Zach Coverstone had 12 points, seven boards and four assists while senior guard Jon Moon totaled 11 points and was 2-of-2 from deep.

The top two seeds and MCC regular season co-champions will meet in the tournament championship. Indiana Wesleyan will play at No. 3-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College on Tuesday, March 3 in Mishawaka, Indiana. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
