Box Score UPLAND, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball 64-59 victory over county rival Taylor (Ind.) University secured a third place finish for the Wildcats in the Mid-Central College Conference.
The two nationally ranked teams entered the day tied for third in the MCC with 10-5 records. No. 21-ranked Indiana Wesleyan's victory also completes the season sweep of the No. 18-ranked Trojans.
Indiana Wesleyan shot a scorching 53.9-percent (28 of 52) from the field while limiting Taylor to just 37.0-percent (17 of 46). IWU needed the wide margin in shooting percentage as the Trojans (19-10, 10-6 MCC) held a 24-5 advantage in free throw attempts. Taylor ended the contest hitting 22-of-24 (91.2-percent) as IWU was 1-for-5 (20.0-percent).
The Wildcats (22-8, 11-5 MCC) also fought an uphill battle as leading scorer and reigning NAIA Division II Player of the Week Elaine Hessel scored just four points.
Sophomore guard Kayla Thompson was one of the Wildcats to pick up Hessel with a season-high 18 points. She was 4-of-9 from deep. Freshman center Krystal Stoneking was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field for 11 points along with six rebounds.
IWU sophomore forward LeAnn Douglas added 12 points and senior guard Andrea Fichter contributed 10.
Indiana Wesleyan will host a MCC First Round game against Marian (Ind.) College or Spring Arbor (Mich.) University. The game will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24 at Luckey Arena.
