Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball team earned a 61-56 win over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College on Friday night in the first game of the Campbellsville Tournament in Campbellsville, Kentucky.
Indiana Wesleyan earned the win over Lindsey Wilson (7-3) who is the first team out of the NAIA Division I Top-25 poll and is the first team in the receiving votes section. IWU is ranked No. 8 in NAIA Division II.
The Wildcats escaped with the victory despite a poor shooting performance (41.8-percent) while the Blue Raiders shot very well (56.8-percent). The Blue Raiders also out-rebounded the Wildcats 32-to-27 and shot seven more free throws.
But Indiana Wesleyan ended the evening with 18 more field goal attempts, forced 19 LWC turnovers, collected 13 offensive rebounds and launched 32 shots from beyond the arc. IWU connected on 13 from 3-point range (40.6-percent), led by junior guard Kayla Thompson who was 5-of-12 from deep. Thompson ended the night with a team-high 15 points in addition to six rebounds and four assists.
A key factor for the Wildcats was the game plan against the Blue Raiders' top player, junior center Viktoria Krell. She entered the game with averages of 18.7 points (15th in NAIA DI) and 11.0 rebounds (4th) but finished the contest with 15 points and six boards. The four other Lindsey Wilson starters combined for just nine points and nine rebounds.
Indiana Wesleyan (11-2) boasted nine players in the scoring column and tallied 18 total assists.
Junior forward LeAnn Douglas contributed 11 points, four rebounds and five assists while sophomore guard Stephanie Burtch added nine points off the bench. Burtch shot 3-of-6 from 3-point range.
Indiana Wesleyan faces another stiff test on Saturday as the Wildcats face host Campbellsville (Ky.) University. The Tigers are ranked No. 10 in NAIA DI. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
