Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- Freshman forward Kelsey Johnston scored the golden goal with just 35 seconds remaining in the second overtime to elevate the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team into the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament championship match.
The goal was the only score of the match as No. 2-seed Indiana Wesleyan defeated visiting No. 3-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) University 1-0 in double OT in the MCC Tournament semifinals.
Freshman forward Kylie Dial was on the far right side of the field and lofted a pass all the way across the 18-yard box to where Johnston was. The Spring Arbor goalkeeper came out to challenge the play but Johnston was quick enough to the ball and cut it off before the keeper could gain possession. Johnston then had an open net to score to send the Wildcats into the championship match.
The match was just 35 seconds away from a 0-0 tie and the two teams would have had to go to a shootout to determine which team would advance to play for the MCC Tournament championship. Indiana Wesleyan was able to avoid the shootouts where anything can happen by taking the match in overtime play.
Indiana Wesleyan (16-2-1) has now earned a shutout in six consecutive matches and has not allowed a goal by the opposition in 12 of 19 matches this season. IWU freshman goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak earned one save in the net to notch the shutout.
While Spring Arbor (12-6-2) was limited to just one shot all day, Indiana Wesleyan was able to fire off 11 shots with seven being on goal.
No. 11-ranked Indiana Wesleyan will battle co-MCC regular season champion Marian (Ind.) University in the MCC Tournament championship match on Saturday, November 14 in Indianapolis. Top-seed Marian earned a 2-1 victory over No. 4-seed Grace (Ind.) College in double overtime in the other MCC semifinal.
