Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Junior forward Elaine Hessel was a perfect 11-of-11 from the field as Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball cruised to an 89-60 victory over previously unbeaten IU-South Bend on Tuesday night in Luckey Arena.
Hessel scored over 20 points for the third consecutive game as she ended with a game-high 22 points. Hessel also ended the night with a game best nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
No. 14-ranked Indiana Wesleyan shot a blistering 55.7-percent (34 of 61) from the floor, including a 60.7-percent (17 of 28) effort during the second half.
With the score tied 4-4, the Wildcats ran off nine unanswered points to take a 13-4 lead. But over the next eight minutes the Titans slowly crawled back and cut the deficit to one point at 24-23 with 6:38 remaining before half.
Indiana Wesleyan responded and scored nine straight points to extend the lead back to double digits at 33-23 and would take a 44-37 lead into the break.
Following an IU-South Bend bucket to open the second half and cut the IWU lead to five points, Indiana Wesleyan recorded eight straight points and never let the lead dip below 10 the rest of the evening. The Wildcats ended the second half outscoring the Titans 45-23 for the 29 point win.
A total of 12 different Wildcats entered the scoring column while seven scored five or more points.
Indiana Wesleyan also controlled the tempo on the defensive end. IWU limited IU-South Bend to just 33.3-percent (8 of 24) shooting during the second half to stretch a seven point halftime lead into a 29 point rout. The defense also forced 21 Titan turnovers with seven Wildcat steals.
Junior forward LeAnn Douglas also played big role in the win with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. She pulled down seven boards and had a pair of assists. Junior guard Kayla Thompson was the third Wildcat in double figures with 11 points and she connected on three 3-point buckets.
Indiana Wesleyan is now 4-0 during the young season while IU-South Bend suffers their first defeat and now stands 5-1.
The Wildcats remain at Luckey Arena over the weekend as IWU hosts the MCC/WHAC Challenge. Indiana Wesleyan will host Madonna (Mich.) University at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 20 and then Cornerstone (Mich.) University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 21.
