Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- Freshmen forwards Kelsey Johnston and Kylie Dial combined for all three goals as Indiana Wesleyan University upended seventh seed Bethel (Ind.) College 3-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament First Round match at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan (15-2-1) is the No. 2-seed in the tournament and advances to the MCC Tournament Semifinal scheduled for next Saturday, November 7. IWU will host the winner of No. 3-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) University and No. 6-seed Taylor (Ind.) University.
Wildcat Field played quite slow as the torrential rains on Friday plus all the rain in recent weeks made playing conditions soggy and very muddy. But Dial quickly put the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the seventh minute of play as junior midfielder Brittany Smith was credited with the assist.
Johnston added an insurance goal for Indiana Wesleyan in the 36th minute as Dial assisted on the tally. IWU took a 2-0 lead into halftime and held a hefty 12-1 advantage in shots.
Johnston completed the scoring with her second goal on the day and put the match out of reach in the 77th minute.
Indiana Wesleyan was dominant in advancing to the tournament semifinals as IWU outshot Bethel 24-2 on the afternoon.
Another Indiana Wesleyan freshman, Beth Anne Nowak, was credited with the shutout victory as the goalkeeper. But Nowak was given an easy task as she did not make a save as the staunch Wildcat defense did not allow a single Bethel (5-10-1) shot on goal.
No. 14-ranked Indiana Wesleyan has a string of five consecutive shutouts and a total of 11 on the season. In the last three matches, IWU opponents have mustered just three shots total with only one being on goal. The last goal scored against the Wildcat defense came early in the second half of the 1-0 loss to Marian (Ind.) University on October 13. Since that score, Indiana Wesleyan has played over 492 minutes without allowing an opponent goal.
The MCC Tournament Semifinal match will be played on November 7 at Wildcat Field. Check the IWU athletic website for information on the time of the match as it becomes available.
