Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- Marian (Ind.) University brought a close to the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer 11 match unbeaten streak on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory at Wildcat Field.
No. 9-ranked Indiana Wesleyan suffers their first lost since the 1-0 season opening defeat at current No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College on September 3. IWU also was also carrying a seven match win streak dating back to a 1-1 tie at current No. 23-ranked Ohio Dominican University.
Marian is in the Receiving Votes section of the latest NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll with a record of 12-0-1 (4-0-0 MCC) following tonight's match. The Knights are one of two unbeaten teams left in the NAIA. Indiana Wesleyan now stands at 10-2-1 and 4-1-0 in conference action.
An entertaining first half featured back and forth action as the teams combined for 12 shots, with Indiana Wesleyan taking eight.
Indiana Wesleyan had a golden opportunity to put a tally up on the scoreboard during the opening 45 minutes. In a scramble in front of the Marian net, junior forward Megan Marshall put a shot on net with the keeper out of position. But a last Marian defender was in the right place for the Knights and pushed the ball away from the goal.
The Wildcats put themselves at a huge disadvantage in the 37th minute as a player received her second yellow card of the match and was ejected. For the final 53 minutes of action IWU was forced to compete a player down.
The match entered halftime in a scoreless draw.
Straight out of the gate in the second half Marian was able to crack the scoreboard with a goal just two and a half minutes in. Maria sophomore Lauren Gerbick earned the tally for her 10th goal of the season.
Despite playing from behind, Indiana Wesleyan was able to continue pressing the Marian defense with numerous scoring opportunities. IWU earned six shots in the half to just two for Marian. Indiana Wesleyan continued to attack the Marian defense in the final 10 minutes with extra players pushing forward.
Marian was able to thwart all the Indiana Wesleyan advances and close the match with a shutout.
Indiana Wesleyan outshot Marian 14-6 on the evening and put four shots on goal to Marian's three. IWU freshman goalkeeper Beth Ann Nowak made a pair of save for the Wildcats in goal.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the pitch at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 16 as the Wildcats travel to play MCC foe University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
