IWU Women's Soccer Wins Pivotal MCC Match with Spring Arbor

Box Score

MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- In a key Mid-Central College Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon Indiana Wesleyan University defeated Spring Arbor (Mich.) University 3-1 at Wildcat Field.

Three unanswered goals by three different Wildcats keyed the No. 11-ranked Indiana Wesleyan victory that moves the team to 4-0-0 in the MCC and 10-1-1 overall.

Spring Arbor (7-5-1, 2-1-0 MCC) struck first in the 21st minute of play for a 1-0 lead early in the match. It was the only shot for the Cougars in the opening half.

Just five minutes later the Wildcats answered with a match tying goal. Senior midfielder Catherine Turner crossed a pass from the left of the box to junior forward Megan Marshall. Marshall did not make full contact but it was enough to beat the SAU keeper for the 1-1 tie.

Less than 10 minutes later Indiana Wesleyan took the lead for good in the 37th minute. Junior midfielder Brittany Horswell attempted to cross a pass in front of the goal but it was blocked. Horswell collected the rebound from 15 yards out and fired the eventual game-winning goal to the back of the net.

Indiana Wesleyan headed to halftime leading 2-1 with a 5-1 advantage in shots.

In the early minutes of the second half, sophomore midfielder Suzy Miesse passed the ball from the right of the 18-yard box towards goal. Freshman Kelsey Johnston was in front of the goal and ricocheted the ball which bound over the keeper's head and into the goal for the 3-1 advantage. The mark came in the 49th minute.

The stifling Wildcat defense once again allowed just a single shot in the second half as the Cougars could only muster two shots all match. IWU freshman goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak earned the win with one save.

Indiana Wesleyan returns to the pitch at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13 as the Wildcats host Marian (Ind.) University at Wildcat Field. The two teams are the only remaining unbeaten squads in the MCC.
