Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University softball team lost to Spring Arbor (Mich.) University with the right to represent the Midwest Region at the NCCAA National Championships on Saturday afternoon in Spring Arbor, Michigan.
Both teams were able to defeat Cedarville (Ohio) University earlier in the day to improve their records to 2-1 in the regional tournament, setting the stage for the winner takes all game.
Spring Arbor (19-16) scored two in the second and added two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to insure the Cougars a spot in the national tournament. Spring Arbor out-hit Indiana Wesleyan 10-6 in the contest.
Sophomore catcher Christy Gibson was the lone Wildcat to reach base multiple times in the game. Gibson ended the game 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and one stolen base.
Earlier in the day, Indiana Wesleyan (19-17) beat Cedarville 11-0 in six innings.
Freshman pitcher Nicole Clark was stellar for the Wildcats as she allowed one hit for the shutout victory. She walked two and struck out four Cedarville (15-23) batters.
Five Wildcats earned multiple hits in the contest, led by senior right fielder Christi Church. She was 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and five runs batted in. Sophomore Melissa Kimmel also homered for Indiana Wesleyan as she scored three runs and knocked in three others.
Junior second baseman Morgan Wheeler was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Gibson and Clark also contributed to the balanced offensive attack with two hits each.
Following the regional tournament, the NCCAA Midwest All-Region and All-Tournament teams were announced.
Church, Wheeler, senior Jeni Stansel and sophomore Molly Yothment were tagged as All-Region. Church, Wheeler, Clark and Gibson were honored for their play this weekend with acknowledgement on the All-Tournament team.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action from April 30 through May 1, as the Wildcats host the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament.
