Box Score 2 SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- All three teams competing in the NCCAA Softball Midwest Regional won and lost a game during the first day of competition.
The three teams will play another round of games against each other to determine who will automatically advance to the NCCAA National Tournament in West Palm Beach, Florida. Indiana Wesleyan will play the final two games of the day as the Wildcats play Cedarville (Ohio) University at 12 p.m. and Spring Arbor (Mich.) University at 2 p.m.
If a winner isn't decided after the second round of games, a what-if game will be played between the two remaining teams at 4 p.m. for the Midwest Regional title.
Indiana Wesleyan (18-16) earned a thrilling victory in the opening game as the Wildcats defeated Cedarville 8-7 in eight innings.
The Yellow Jackets (15-21) grabbed a 7-5 lead in the top of the eighth inning. Junior shortstop Morgan Wheeler led off the bottom half of the inning with a home run to cut the deficit to one run. Senior second baseman Jeni Stansel doubled which brought senior right fielder Christi Church to the plate. Church jacked a walk-off home run to hand the Wildcats an exhilarating 8-7 victory.
Church finished the contest 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and six runs batted in. Wheeler was 3-for-5 with a home run and a double while Stansel knocked two hits.
In the second game of the day, host Spring Arbor (17-16) pulled off a 5-3 victory.
Freshman pitcher Nicole Clark supplied all the Wildcat offense with a three-run home run. Wheeler, Church and sophomore third baseman Katie Berkemeier all contributed a base hit.
