Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University softball team opened Mid-Central College Conference play today with a doubleheader split with Spring Arbor (Mich.) University at the Outdoor Sports Complex.
The Wildcats dropped game one 4-2 after the Cougars scored all four of their runs in the final inning.
Senior Jeni Stansel collected two hits and scored one run for the Wildcats. Junior shortstop Morgan Wheeler and sophomore catcher Christy Gibson each added a RBI.
Freshman Kate Hall pitched 5-1/3 scoreless inning for IWU as she scattered seven hits and stuck out three.
In game two, Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead and held to earn the doubleheader split.
IWU plated three runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth to take a commanding 8-1 lead. But Spring Arbor chipped away at the deficit with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 8-4.
Spring Arbor scored three runs in the seventh innings and had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, but Stansel got out of the jam to secure the win for Indiana Wesleyan.
Senior right fielder Christi Church was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Sophomore first baseman Molly Yothment and Gibson each had two hits and three RBI?s in the winning effort. Freshman Nicole Clark earned the win on the mound.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 31, as the Wildcats travel to play Grace (Ind.) College in Winona Lake, Indiana.
