PULASKI, Tenn. -- Defending national champion Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College shutout the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in Pulaski, Tennessee.

Martin Methodist, the tournament's No. 6-seed, increased their shutout streak to 11 consecutive matches as the RedHawks advance to the National Championship's round of 16 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Indiana Wesleyan took a big hit before the match even got underway. Leading scorer Megan Marshall turned her ankle during warmups. She attempted to compete but was eventually pulled for a substitute.

With the loss of Marshall, Indiana Wesleyan struggled up top. IWU managed to take just five shots all match as Martin Methodist fired off 15.

Martin Methodist found the back of the net in the 31st minute of play. Gabriela Demelo headed in a corner kick opportunity to hand the RedHawks a 1-0 advantage.

Indiana Wesleyan recorded their best scoring opportunity in the 41st minute as Brittany Smith struck a ball that seemed destined to tie the score. But Martin Methodist goalkeeper Hanit Schwarz made a spectacular save to preserve the lead for the RedHawks.

The score remained 1-0 as the teams headed into halftime.

Martin Methodist nailed home an insurance goal in the 66th minute for a 2-0 lead as Nicole O'Donnell headed home another corner kick for the RedHawks.

Indiana Wesleyan was unable to crack the Martin Methodist defense in the final 25 minutes of action as the Wildcats were limited to one shot over that time.

Wildcat senior goalkeeper Melissa Gingerich collected seven saves on nine shots on goal for Indiana Wesleyan.

Indiana Wesleyan's season comes to an end with a 14-3-1 record. Martin Methodist improves to 19-1-0.
