Box Score LIVONIA, Mich. -- In a battle of highly ranked teams No. 8-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University defeated No. 6-ranked Cornerstone (Mich.) University in the final day of the MCC/WHAC Challenge in Livonia, Michigan.
The Wildcats won the overtime struggle 64-60 as IWU sophomore forward Elaine Hessel poured in a game-high 20 points and team-best six rebounds. She was 8-of-14 from the floor.
In an extremely close game throughout, no team earned a lead greater than five points. The game featured 15 ties and 20 lead changes.
IWU sophomore guard Kayla Thompson connected from 3-point land with 1:04 to play in regulation to knot the score at 53-53. Hessel hit 1-of-2 free throws with 32 seconds left and Thompson also hit on 1-of-2 free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give the Wildcats a 55-53 advantage.
Cornerstone (4-2) had one last opportunity and scored in the paint with three seconds to go as Thompson's desperation 3-pointer missed to send the contest into overtime with the teams deadlocked at 55.
The score was tied 60-60 with three minutes on the clock in overtime, but the Indiana Wesleyan defense tightened and did not allow another Golden Eagle point the rest of the way as Indiana Wesleyan captured the 64-60 victory.
Indiana Wesleyan (4-3) forced Cornerstone into 24 turnovers and 0-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25 as Indiana Wesleyan opens Mid-Central College Conference play in their home opener against Goshen (Ind.) College.
