MARION, Ind. -- Ten days ago the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team had no problem with Huntington (Ind.) University with a 6-0 win. Today was a new challenge for the Wildcats in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament first round as IWU survived the No. 6-seeded Foresters 1-0.
IWU senior Becca Mathews, who earned a hat trick in the last meeting, netted the lone goal of the match for the Wildcats in the 59th minute of play.
Indiana Wesleyan, the tournament's No. 3-seed, dominated possession the entire match and out-shot the visitors 16-3. IWU put 12 shots on goal to Huntington's three.
Senior Melissa Gingerich captured the win in goal for the Wildcats. She stopped two Forester shots to earn the shutout victory.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 12-2-1 on the year while Huntington's season comes to a close with an 8-9-1 mark.
The Wildcats will hit the road for the MCC semifinals next Saturday. Indiana Wesleyan will battle Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, the tournament's second seed. Spring Arbor defeated No. 7 Bethel (Ind.) College 1-0 in overtime to advance.
