FRESHMAN PIZARRO AND NYAGURUNGO LEAD MEN'S SOCCER TO UPSET OVER NO. 13 RIO GRANDE

MARION, Ind. - After going down a goal late in the second half, freshman Jose Pizarro and Brandon Nyagurungo propel (RV) Indiana Wesleyan men's soccer to the 2-1 upset over No. 13 University of Rio Grande. This marks the first Top-15 win for the program since the Wildcats beat the Red Storm back on Sept. 12, 2020.

WHAT HAPPENED



 

  • After each teams remained scoreless in the opening 45 minutes, Rio Grande netted the first goal of the game in the 65th minute.
  • The Wildcats earned a free kick outside the 18 yard box, and freshman Jose Pizarro bent in the equalizer in the top left corner of the goal.
  • Four minutes later, the red and grey built another attack with clean passing through the middle to find another freshman, Brandon Nyagurungo, for the game winner.
  • Tim Slusarczyk picked up his first assist of the season off the through ball to Nyagurungo for the go-ahead score.

  • 2: Jose Pizarro has scored two goals this season, both on set-pieces outside the box of the left side of the field.
  • 3: Dating back to 2007, this is just the 3rd time in 11 matches that IWU have beaten Rio Grande.
