Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Four different Wildcats scored on Wednesday evening as Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer overcame an early deficit to defeat visiting Bethel (Ind.) 4-1 at Wildcat Field.
Bethel opened the scoring with a goal in the 21st minute but Indiana Wesleyan answered with four unanswered goals to collect win number one in the Crossroads League. IWU moves to 5-4-0 this year and 1-1-0 in league action while Bethel falls to 5-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the league.
“The first half was by far our worst of the season,” said Wildcat head coach Luke Sanford. “Really poor first half but then a really good response from the boys in the second half. They really did the things we talked about at halftime and I thought they executed much better in the second half.”
Corey Lopez (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) evened the match in the 35th minute and Caleb Denlinger (JR/Miamisburg, Ohio) scored the eventual game-winner in the 44th minute just before halftime. Indiana Wesleyan took the 2-1 lead into halftime after Bethel held a 7-5 advantage in shots.
“Unbelievable performance from Caleb Denlinger tonight,” Sanford said of the goal by Denlinger. “He was really calm on the ball. He moved it well and was really dangerous.”
The Wildcats came out of halftime and really controlled the tempo. IWU finally created some breathing room in the final 10 minutes of the match. Taylor Lehman (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.) got past the Pilot defense and gave the team an insurance goal in the 82nd minute while Derek Williams (SO/Rockford, Mich.) scored in the 89th minute when he knocked in a ball that Shawn Bloch (SO/Rockford, Mich.) hit off the crossbar for the 4-1 lead.
“I was really proud of the full team performance,” Sanford said after four players scored and 15 Wildcats saw the field.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the pitch on Saturday afternoon during IWU Homecoming. Indiana Wesleyan hosts Oakland City (Ind.) in a non-league match at 3:45 at Wildcat Field.
