Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer was upset 2-1 Saturday evening by Bluefield (Va.) at the Waterford Estates Fall Classic hosted by Bethel (Ind.) in Mishawaka, Indiana.
“The game got pretty wild and there was no rhythm,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Luke Sanford. “We gave in to the emotion of the game and just never looked like ourselves. We are disappointed but are already excited to get to play again next weekend.”
Indiana Wesleyan opened the match with a great 15 minute stretch. IWU took advantage and grabbed the early lead on a Corey Lopez (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) goal in the 14th minute. Evan Young (JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) found a streaking Lopez who chipped the shot over the Bluefield keeper.
With 26 minutes remaining in the first half Bluefield would score the equalizer. Less than three minutes later Bluefield scored again and took the 2-1 lead.
“Frustrating game for us tonight,” continued Sanford. “We never found ourselves and the rhythm of the game got away from us. We started so well, scored a good goal, and had several chances in the first 10 minutes to put some real distance between us and Bluefield but we didn’t take advantage.”
“But I am proud of the way the boys carried themselves. The guys showed class and should be proud of that.”
The Wildcats outshot the Rams 17-8 and held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Wildcat Field next weekend as they host the IWU Classic on September 18-19. Indiana Wesleyan hosts No. 19 Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then No. 2 Northwestern Ohio on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
