Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer team claimed their third consecutive victory Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout of host Marian (Ind.) in Indianapolis, Indiana.
During the three match win streak the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 10-1. In each of the three matches no Wildcat has scored two goals in one match as seven players have combined to score the 10 goals.
“This was another full team performance,” said IWU head coach Luke Sanford. “We played a lot of guys and had great contributions today. We wanted six points this weekend and that’s exactly what we got. Now we just have to keep our momentum rolling into Wednesday at Taylor. We are hoping for a lot of support from our fans in what will inevitably be a tough game.”
Indiana Wesleyan defeated Oakland City (Ind.) 2-0 on Saturday during Homecoming at IWU and less than 24 hours later they won 4-0 in a Crossroads League match at Marian. The victory moves Indiana Wesleyan to 7-4-0 this season and 2-1-0 in league play. Marian drops to 5-6-1 and 2-1-0 in the Crossroads League.
The Wildcats scored three first half goals to build a sizable lead early. Corey Lopez (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 16th minutes while Evan Young (JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored less than three minutes later for a 2-0 advantage. Caleb Denlinger (JR/Miamisburg, Ohio) scored the final first half goal in the 37th minute as the Wildcats took the 3-0 lead into halftime.
Samuel Conti (FR/Fredonia, NY) recorded the only second half goal for the 4-0 score. The mark came in the 61st minute.
“This was another solid mature performance by the guys,” said Sanford. “The boys wanted to send a message today against a Marian team that has had some solid results and I believe we did just that.”
Indiana Wesleyan next plays at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as they play in the Indiana Wesleyan-Taylor Rivalry Game presented by Marion General Hospital. The match will be contested in Upland, Indiana.
