LONDON, Ky. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s golf team traveled to London, Kentucky to face some stiff competition at the Bill Sergent Invitational hosted by Cumberlands (Ky.).
Indiana Wesleyan finished sixth place in the eight team tournament that included three nationally ranked programs. Cumberlands won their invite with a two-round total of 617 (314-303), Campbellsville (Ky.) was runner-up at 637 (326-311), and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) placed third with a 648 (330-318).
SCAD Atlanta (Ga.) earned fourth place at 656 (335-321) while Union (Ky.) earned fifth place with a 670 (339-331). Indiana Wesleyan was in sixth place at 705 (362-343).
“Our team shaved 19 strokes from day one and this is a tremendous accomplishment for the program,” said IWU head coach Julie Wagner. “We have not been good with day two score, but today the ladies did such a great job of staying in the present to make that happen. It’s a wonderful milestone and I’m so proud of them all.”
Indiana Wesleyan was in sixth place following the first round and held their position through round two. Round one on Thursday was suspended after a rain delay led to darkness. Three Wildcats did not finish the first round until Friday morning.
Maggie Kaiser (SO/Belvidere, Ill.) was the low score for Indiana Wesleyan with a 174 (89-85) to tie for 28th position. Rachel Thompson (FR/Avon, Ind.) (92-85) and Jessica Meloche (JR/Gowen, Mich.) (90-87) tied for 34th place with 177’s. Carley LaPlant (FR/Adrian, Mich.) shot a 182 (96-86) for 37th place, Haley Elenbaas (JR/Byron Center, Mich.) carded a 183 (92-91) for 39th place, and Jessica Pegg (JR/Wabash, Ind.) earned a 192 (91-101) for 44th position.
Indiana Wesleyan next hosts the NCCAA Midwest Regional Qualifier on September 12-13 at Timbergate Golf Club in Edinburgh, Indiana. The winner of the tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Championship in Panama City, Florida in late October.
