Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer won their fifth straight match Friday night in a 3-1 victory over Aquinas (Mich.) in the first contest of the Bethel Classic in Mishawaka, Indiana.
The Wildcats scored the final three goals of the match to erase a one goal deficit. With the victory the Wildcats improve to 6-1-0 on the season while the Saints drop their first match of the season for a 6-1-0 mark.
Aldony Mendez scored the first goal of the match for Aquinas in the 44th minute. An Indiana Wesleyan foul in the box forced a PK situation which Mendez took and scored.
The 1-0 Aquinas lead was short lived as Indiana Wesleyan tied the score 45 seconds later. With the first half clock winding down, Indiana Wesleyan had a throw in. Off the throw the ball ended up at the feet of Keaton Albert (JR/Park City, Ill.) who beat the Aquinas keep for the goal with 24 seconds left in the half.
The Wildcats claimed their first lead of the night in the 62nd minute. On a counterattack opportunity Tyrone Martin (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.) found Corey Lopez (JR/Warsaw, Ind.) in front of the goal as he hit the back of the net for a 2-1 IWU advantage.
Indiana Wesleyan added to their lead in the 71st minute when Taylor Lehman (JR/Indianapolis, Ind.) scored an unassisted goal. After beating the last defender, the Aquinas keeper misplayed the ball and Lehman put the shot past the keeper for a 3-1 advantage.
IWU keeper Josh Goepper (JR/Shelby Township, Mich.) claimed the victory in net with four saves. Indiana Wesleyan held a 10-8 advantage in shots in addition to an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Indiana Wesleyan plays again tomorrow night at the Bethel Classic. IWU battles Saint Ambrose (Iowa) at 3:30 p.m. in Mishawaka, Indiana. The match was moved up with the possibility of thunderstorms tomorrow evening.
