PERU, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s golf team completed its second season of play today with a third place finish at the Crossroads League Championship held at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Indiana.
“I am so very proud of this team,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Julie Wagner. “All season we have told ourselves we are the number three in this league. It just took us until the league championship to get there.”
Marian (Ind.) pulled off the upset of Bethel (Ind.) and won the Crossroads League Championship by 11 strokes. Marian scored 985 compared to 996 for Bethel. Indiana Wesleyan was third with 1,095 and edged Saint Francis (Ind.) with 1,099.
“We had a good short game in all three rounds,” continued Wagner. “We finally became a day two playing team by taking 15 strokes off of our first round score. This is the type of golf we need to play in every match. This is what it takes to make big moves on the next place and not lose spots.”
Freshman Maggie Kaiser (FR/Belvidere, Ill.) earned All-League recognition for her ninth place finish at the championship. The top-10 spots were awarded the honor. Kaiser was steady all tournament with a final score of 262 (87-88-87) over the 54-holes.
“This was her best spring performance for us,” said Wagner. “She is capable of giving this type of play on a regular basis. She finally got all parts of her game working this weekend.”
Jessica Meloche (SO/Gowen, Mich.) was the next low card for the Wildcats with a 268 (96-84-88) as she tied for 11th place. Taylor Goshert (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) shot a 280 (97-94-89) for 18th place while Jessica Pegg (SO/Wabash, Ind.) (98-95-94) and Haley Elenbaas (SO/Byron Center, Mich.) (96-95-96) tied for 20th position with final scores of 287.
The Indiana Wesleyan comes to a close with the championship performance. IWU returns to action in August for the start of fall season.
