Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Three quick goals were more than enough for No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer as they handled visiting Saint Francis (Ind.) 6-1 on Saturday night in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan, the top seed in the league tournament, advances to the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals next Saturday. IWU will host No. 4-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) who defeated No. 5-seed Grace 2-1 in double overtime.
The Wildcats put the match away before it was even 15 minutes old. IWU scored three goals in less than six minutes to lead 3-0 in the first 13:13 of the match.
Keaton Albert (JR/Park City, Ill.) struck first with a goal in the 8th minute. Less than five minutes later Tyrone Martin (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.) scored the first of his three goals in the 13th minute. Just 29 seconds after the Martin goal, Corey Lopez (JR/Warsaw, Ind.) scored to make it 3-0. Neither team scored the rest of the first half as Indiana Wesleyan took a 3-0 lead into intermission.
Martin scored his second goal of the night in the 72nd minute but Saint Francis scored two minutes later for a 4-1 score. Lopez found the back of the net in the 78th minute for a 5-1 Indiana Wesleyan advantage and Martin earned the hat trick with the final score of the night in the 88th minute of play.
Indiana Wesleyan dominated play all night as IWU held a massive 26-9 advantage in shots. IWU had at least 11 shots in each half. Indiana Wesleyan peppered the Saint Francis net with 14 shots on goal while Saint Francis managed to put five on net. IWU keeper Josh Goepper (JR/Shelby Township, Mich.) made three saves on the evening.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 16-1-0 on the season while Saint Francis ends their year with an 8-10-1 mark. Check iwuwildcats.com on Monday for information on the start time of the semifinal match next Saturday.
