ANGOLA, Ind. -- Thursday brought about another successful day on the golf course for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s golf team at the Trine Fall Classic at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan was runner-up in the massive 15-team field with a team score of 347. IWU was a mere six strokes behind Cleary (Mich.) for the team title as they shot a winning score of 341. Host Trine (Ind.) took third place at 351.
“I told our team going in we were a top-three team in this tournament,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Julie Wagner. “We did not have a good warm-up on the range before we teed off so I was not sure what to expect today. But they grinded it out and finished well.”
Jessica Meloche won medalist honors on Thursday with an 18-hole score of 80 (40-40). She won the classic by two strokes in the 87-player field.
“I'm very proud of this accomplishment of Jessica,” said Wagner. “She has the game to do this from week to week, and to beat a field of over 80 golfers is quite impressive. She played great golf today!”
It is the second medalist honor for Meloche in her career. She last did so in the very first invitational for the IWU women’s golf program at the IU East Fall Tee-Off on August 24, 2012. She won the invitational with a 79 that day in the 18-player field.
Kelli Sewell was second for the Wildcats with an 87 (41-46) and finished tied for 12th overall. Taylor Goshert (48-42) and Haley Elenbaas (45-45) each carded a 90 and tied for 21st position while Maggie Kaiser shot a 97 (43-54) and tied for 43rd place.
Indiana Wesleyan quickly returns to the links on Saturday as the Wildcats take part in the Manchester Invitational. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. at the Honeywell Golf Course in Wabash, Indiana.
