Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- For over 87 minutes Friday night the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer team had thoughts of an upset as they played at No. 9 Rio Grande (Ohio). But Rio Grande struck in the 88th minute and held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Red Storm outshot the Wildcats 14-1 on the evening, including eight shots in the second half. But the Wildcats forced many of the shots from distance as only five shots were on goal. Keeper Zach Hammon made four saves on the night for the Wildcats with two saves coming in each half.
The game-winning goal was scored by Luiz Filho off an assist from Logan Gumbert with 2:09 remaining in regulation.
Rio Grande is a perennial power in the NAIA with one NAIA national championship and 12 straight appearances in the national tournament. Six of those trips have led to quarterfinal berths which include three in the past five seasons.
But the Indiana Wesleyan defense stood strong the entire match, frustrating Rio Grande. Hammon made great saves in net during the first half and Dylan Bronkema continued the great defensive play for IWU in the second half with a huge block on a Rio Grande free kick attempt to perserve the 0-0 tie.
Indiana Wesleyan will continue the weekend with a second straight quality opponent in NCAA Division II foe Charleston (W.V.). The match begins Saturday at 6 p.m. against the NCAA DII preseason No. 11-ranked team.
